This multi-week class is available for 6th - 8th grade students and has been scheduled to meet the needs of the homeschool community. Class size is limited to 10 students to allow for more individualized instruction and one-on-one time with the teacher.
Semester 1 meets weekly on Tuesdays from 10:30am-12:00pm, September 8 - January 19 (excluding school breaks & closures). Click here for the quarter long option.
Class Description:
Learn the glazing and surface design techniques of a ceramic artist—and then use those skills to make your own unique style come alive. In this quarter-long course, students will explore ceramic surface design and glazes using premade ceramic forms as their canvas.
Each project begins with instruction in a specific ceramic technique or design concept. Students will experiment with wax resist, marbling, bubble glazing, sgraffito, specialty glazes, and more while also exploring color theory, perspective, pattern, texture, and the creative process.
Rather than following a single finished example, students will learn and practice each technique, develop their own designs, and decide how to put what they've learned into practice. The result is a collection of 6-8 ceramic pieces that demonstrate new skills while reflecting each student's individual interests and artistic style.
Each quarter will reinforce the fundamentals of glazing while introducing new techniques, creative variations, and different projects. Students who continue for the full semester will build on their skills while creating new and unique pieces throughout both quarters.
Your instructor, Keri, brings over 14 years of experience in education, including teaching K–8 art, teaching high school ceramics, substitute teaching, working at youth camps, and homeschooling her own three children.
No previous ceramic experience is necessary. All ceramic pieces, glazes, tools, materials, and firings are included. Classes meet weekly on Tuesdays 10:30am–12:00 pm. Semester 1 dates: September 8 - January 19 excluding school breaks and closures. At this time we are unable to offer make-up classes for student absences.
Semester 1 includes 16 weeks of instruction for $450 per student—a savings of $30 when compared to purchasing each quarter separately. Or if desired, students may enroll for quarter 1 only at $240.
