This multi-week class is available for 3rd - 5th grade students and has been scheduled to meet the needs of the homeschool community. Class size is limited to 8 students to allow for more individualized instruction and one-on-one time with the teacher.

Quarter 1 meets weekly on Tuesdays from 9:00am-10:00am from September 8 - October 27 (excluding school breaks & closures). Quarter 2 sign-ups will be available in October. Class will meet at the same weekly time from November 3 - January 19.

Class description:

Build a foundation in ceramic glazing (painting) and design through fun, guided projects! In this quarter-long course, students will explore the basics of glazing and visual art while creating a variety of finished ceramic pieces.

Each project will introduce a new art concept or glazing technique through step-by-step instruction. Students will explore color mixing, pattern, line, and composition while experimenting with techniques such as tape resist, sgraffito, sponging, and more.

Projects will be instructor-led while still leaving plenty of room for students to choose their own colors, patterns, and creative details. Throughout the quarter, students will build confidence using glazes and brushes, practice making artistic choices, and create a collection of 6-8 unique ceramic pieces to take home.

Each quarter will reinforce the fundamentals of glazing and design while introducing new techniques, creative variations, and projects. Students who also enroll for quarter 2 will build on their skills while creating new pieces throughout both quarters.

Your instructor, Keri, brings over 14 years of experience educating children and teens including teaching K–8 Art & High School Ceramics, leading out at youth camps, and homeschooling her own kids.

No previous ceramic experience is necessary. All ceramic pieces, glazes, tools, materials, and firings are included. This is not a clay making class. Classes meet weekly on Tuesdays from 9:00am-10:00am. Quarter 1 dates meet Sept. 8 - Oct. 27 excluding school breaks or closures. At this time we are unable to provide make-up classes for any student absences.

Quarter 1 includes 8 weeks of instruction for $200 per student. A payment plan is available at check out.

Homeschool or charter school funds may be available to help cover the cost of classes. We are a Community Partner with Logos Public Charter School and are approved to be reimbursed through OpenEd. Please check with your school or program for eligibility and reimbursement requirements.

Class Description:

Learn the glazing and surface design techniques of a ceramic artist—and then use those skills to make your own unique style come alive. In this quarter-long course, students will explore ceramic surface design and glazes using premade ceramic forms as their canvas.

Each project begins with instruction in a specific ceramic technique or design concept. Students will experiment with tape resist, marbling, bubble glazing, sgraffito, specialty glazes, and more while also exploring color theory, perspective, pattern, and the creative process.

Rather than following a single finished example (though that is an option), students will learn and practice each technique, develop their own designs, and decide how to put what they've learned into practice. The result is a collection of 6-8 ceramic pieces that demonstrate new skills while reflecting each student's individual interests and artistic style.

Each quarter will reinforce the fundamentals of glazing while introducing new techniques, creative variations, and different projects. Students who continue for the full semester will build on their skills while creating new and unique pieces throughout both quarters.

Join us for a creative afternoon of painting pottery. This is a relaxed, beginner-friendly experience where you get to choose your piece and paint (glaze) it however you like — all in the comfort of the fabulous Main Street Coffee House.

Choose one ceramic piece to paint:

• Bowl

• Tumbler

• Mug

• Dessert plate

There will also be a selection of smaller ceramic items available for purchase and painting during the event. We like to include some fun seasonal items.

What’s included:

• All materials, tools, and paints (glazes)

• Instruction on how to use the glazes for different effects

• Professional firing of your painted piece(s)

Tasty drinks will be available for purchase from the coffee bar (drinks are not included in the ticket price). Coffee & Paint is designed for ages 8 and up. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is also registered for the workshop. All finished pieces will be available for pick-up 2-3 weeks after the event.

🎨 Open Paint at Blue Heron Clayworks!

Join us on the third Thursday of each month from 3–8:30 PM for Open Paint!

Pick a session that works for you, choose any ceramic piece from our shelves, and paint it however you like. We provide the paints, supplies, and firing—you bring the creativity!

Open Paint is $12 per painter, plus the cost of the pottery you choose (most items are between $8 and $28).

Walk-ins are welcome as space allows, but we recommend reserving your spot ahead of time to make sure there's a seat waiting for you. You can show up anytime within the time frame, as long as you can finish your project before the end of the session.

Come with friends, bring the family, or just enjoy a relaxing afternoon or evening solo! Your items will be ready for pick up once they are fired (1-2 weeks later).
